Macmillan/McGraw-Hill California Treasures was adopted as the core language arts program during the 2008-2009 California language arts adoption cycle. The Macmillan/McGraw-Hill California Treasures series is a comprehensive language arts program which integrates instruction in all areas of the discipline while incorporating the five essential elements of reading:
•Phonemic Awareness – the ability to hear, identify, and play with individual sounds, or phonemes, in spoken words;
•Phonics – the relationship between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language;
•Fluency – the capacity to read text accurately and quickly;
•Vocabulary – the words students must know to communicate effectively; and
•Comprehension – the ability to understand and gain meaning from what has been read.
Research supports the effectiveness of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill California Treasures with populations similar to the Charter School’s.
